Aileen Mary Sutherland was born to William Tudor and Ethel Mary (nee Garrard) Sutherland on 27th July 1893 in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire.
Aileen’s mother was Ethel Garrard. Ethel was the daughter of James Mortimer and Mary Garrard of Garrard the Goldmakers. James was the grandson of Robert Garrard and he ran the business until his death in 1900, at which point his son Sebastian (Aileen’s uncle) took over the running of the business until his death 1946.
Aileen’s paternal family were the Sutherlands of Skibo Castle (bought by her grandfather Evan) and Walkers of Lightcliffe, Yorkshire. Evan Charles Sutherland-Walker, a Scot, inherited a large estate from his father and aunt, including properties in Lightcliffe, Hipperholme, and surrounding areas, and he added his mother’s maiden name, Walker, to his own as a condition of inheriting the Lightcliffe estate.
