Gerald was named after Gerald du Maurier and Henry after Henry Ainly.
Gerald was educated at Bradfield College and worked as a stockbroker’s clerk before turning to the stage, as an actor and playwright. He first acted professionally in 1931. In 1932/3 he toured Australia with his mother, actress Grace Lane.
He is the author of the very successful play ‘George and Margaret’, which ran for two years in London’s West End; ‘String Quartet’ and other plays.
He lived in the USA in the 1940s and 50s writing for film and television, and became an American citizen.[2] After returning to England in the mid 1950s he became a writer, producer and production manager for Granada Television,
He was Executive Producer Granada Television 1964 and Head of Plays at the BBC, 1965-72.
He was baptised at St James’ Piccadilly on 3rd January 1910. He married four times, but had no children.
