Ernest Charles Savory was born in London on 5th February 1861, baptised at St George’s, Hanover Square on 3rd April the same year. Like his brother Arthur, he was educated at Winchester College (1875-79). Ernest married Madeline May at Saint John The Evangelist, Hyde Park Crescent, London on 12th July 1893. He was a solicitor by profession and a partner in the firm Leighton and Savory, who had their offices in the City of London.
He married Madeline May and had four children, Captain Maurice Jeffrey, Joan Agnes, Second Lieutenant Ernest Harley and Frank Eric Field. Two of the sons, Maurice and Ernest were killed in World War I, within six months of each other.
Joan Agnes, was Ernest’s second child and was born on 3rd July 1896 and died 23rd March 1981. The longest living Savory to date. Baptised at St John The Evangelist Church on 4th March 1896 she went on to marry the Reverend John Robert Shuckburgh Stranack, who was educated at Lancing and Oriel College, Oxford. He served in the Seaforth Highlanders in World War I and was awarded the Military Cross and mentioned in despatches. His parishes were all in the south of England, viz: Acton, Basingstoke, Alton, Bassett (near Southampton), Southbourne (near Bournmouth) and Emery Down (near Lyndhurst).
They had three daughters: Sheila who married Canon Julian Rudd, Anthea who married Douglas Campbell Doughty and Cicely “Alison” who married David Watkins.
