Susan (‘Sue’) Elizabeth Savory was born on 7 October 1950, in Ealing, West London, the second child of David Arthur and Sheila.
Prior to Sue’s birth her parents and older brother Nicholas were living in Nigeria; Sheila returned to London for her birth, initially living in Richmond, Surrey and then Surbiton, Surrey. Susan was christened at Hampton Court Palace in 1951.
She attended St Hilary’s Prep School in Godalming, Surrey and then she boarded at Tortington Park School, Arundel, Sussex. She was at this school with her cousin Loraine.
The family home would often change and the family moved between Surrey and London with much frequency. Having homes, in Dunsfold, Surrey and Islington, London. All her summer holidays were spent at the family’s holiday home in Seaview, on the Isle of Wight.
In 1966-67 Sue spent six months with a French family in Saint Servant, France to learn French with Madame de Bellevue who was used to having students to stay in the Summer. It was not a very successful stay!
Between 1967-68, Sue attended Winkfield Cookery College, which was founded by Constance Spry, where she did a domestic science course, cooking, flower arranging and dress making. It was very close by to Sandhurst Army Barracks!
On 21 October 1978, she married, solicitor, Edward Stephen Giles in St Peter ad Vincula in His Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London.
Originally, living in Wimbledon Park in SW London, they moved to Seaview on the Isle of Wight in July 1980.
They have two children, Richard George Giles born in Newport, Isle of Wight on 10th December 1981 who now lives in London and Penny Mary Giles also born in Newport, on 14 April 1984. Penny married Robert Bryant on 4 July 2015, having had her first child Ruby Elizabeth Bryant on 4 July 2014 and Barnaby George Bryant on 24 September 2016. They live in Hamble-Le-Rice, Hampshire.
